Interventional Cardiology Fellowship curriculum
Contact usThe Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year program. It provides solid clinical experience and an opportunity to enhance skills through participation in consultations and diagnostics; performance of advanced interventional procedures; post-procedure management of cardiac disorders; and research opportunities. At the end of the training year, fellows should be able to function at a very high level of interventional cardiology.
This clinical assignment is 12 months at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, with exposure to cardiac cauterization and peripheral laboratories. Critical care experience focuses on interventional cardiology procedures, hemodynamics, the use of pharmacologic therapy and management of all acute cardiac disorders. Fellows will also serve as teaching resources for the internal medicine and cardiovascular disease teaching service.
Catheterization & vascular laboratory
Fellows are responsible for pre-procedure assessment, participating in the procedure, interpretation of studies and post-procedure patient management. During assignment in this area, fellows present selected cases at the monthly interventional cardiology catheterization conference.
Techniques include:
- Diagnostic heart catheterization
- Device and pharmaceutical trials
- Endocardial biopsy
- Intra-aortic balloon pumps
- Peripheral vascular angiography
Continuity outpatient clinic
Each fellow is assigned to an interventional cardiology teaching physician's clinic for one half-day per week.
Clinics are held at all campus sites: the Milwaukee Heart Institute on the Aurora Sinai campus, and the Professional Office Building on the Aurora St. Luke's campus.
Research
Fellows, along with their research mentor, are required to devote 10 percent of their time throughout their training to cardiovascular research.
Fellows are expected to complete a research project during their fellowship on a topic relevant to interventional cardiology. This research project will provide the background for interpreting future clinical trials and publications.
Required conferences
Conferences, along with journal clubs and research conferences, provide fellows with extensive resources for enhancing their learning experience.
Required conferences include:
- Cath Conference – Basic Science Conference (weekly, Tuesday, 5-6:30 p.m.)
- Interventional Cardiology Cath/M&M/Research & Journal Club Conference (second Friday each month, 6-7 a.m.)
