Fellowship training for the Aurora Health Care Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship takes place at both the flagship Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center as well as at the Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha.

Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center is an internationally-recognized 900-bed facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin which is home to the busiest hyperbaric medicine program in the nation. This training site has a longstanding tradition of undersea and hyperbaric medicine dating back to the 1960s, when Dr. Eric Kindwall popularized the clinical application of hyperbaric oxygen using the original "Bonnie and Clyde" chambers. While at St. Luke’s Dr. Kindwall later wrote his globally-recognized and often-cited textbook, "Hyperbaric Medicine Practice.”

Building on Dr. Kindwall's accomplishments, our program today has evolved into a premier hyperbaric medicine and wound care department that is fully accredited and integrated across one of the largest health care systems in America.

The heart of this program, now led by Dr. Laurie Gesell, is the multi-place hyperbaric chamber at St. Luke's which can treat up to 25 patients in a single session, and whose critical care capacity is unsurpassed in the country (making it a national leader in both patient volume and treatment acuity).

The program is also complimented by 9 additional hospital-based wound care facilities located in the Milwaukee metropolitan region and beyond. Collectively, they house 18 monoplace chambers and account for 33,650 patient visits per year.

Further contributing to our mission and serving the needs of our highest risk patients is the Aurora Limb Preservation Program at Aurora St. Luke’s. This clinic provides comprehensive and timely limb salvage strategies through close collaboration between our physicians and subspecialty providers.

Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha will provide an opportunity for fellows to learn management of patients in a monoplace chamber environment, unlike the multi-place chamber teaching occurring at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha Hyperbaric Program is one of the largest volumes for patient care second to Aurora Saint Luke’s Medical Center.

Fellows will learn how monoplace chambers operate, safety standards, relative risks to consider for patients prior to treatment in monoplace chamber, and emergency protocols for monoplace chambers. Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha is also one of three limb preservation programs at Advocate Aurora Health and is led by the Hyperbaric/Wound Care team. Fellows will have the opportunity to be involved in monthly limb salvage meeting while at Aurora Medical Center – Kenosha.
