Veterans for veterans program

Apply to be a hospice volunteer

Many people in hospice are members of our nation’s armed forces. When these heroes come to Aurora Health Care for hospice care, they may have physical and mental issues related to their military service.

As a military veteran or active service member, you are in a unique position to understand the complex needs of other veterans at the end of life. The Veterans for Veterans program matches service members with military veterans in hospice to provide a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on.

As part of our commitment to veterans’ services, we provide extra training for those who want to help a veteran. As a veteran volunteer, you perform many of the same duties as civilian companion volunteers. However, you also provide a special type of comradery and understanding for those who served.

The Veterans for Veterans program is for military veterans and active duty service members. Volunteers work with people staying in Aurora Zilber Family Hospice facility and those in hospice at home.

Pinning ceremonies

In addition to providing companionship, our military veteran volunteers perform special pinning ceremonies for former members of the armed forces. Special gifts, including a pin, quilt, certificate of appreciation and thank-you card, help veterans in hospice know how much their service is valued.
