Experience and excellence

Led by Dr. Steven Andrews, Dr. Donald Keen, and Dr. Andrew Aswegan, Aurora South WI EMS provides medical direction for EMS agencies (both municipal and private-for-profit), law enforcement agencies, and Naloxone administration programs in Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth counties.

Dr. Andrews began his career in 1987 as an EMT and became a Paramedic in 1989. He was an EMT/Paramedic for 8 years and a Flight Physician for 8 years. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1995 and completed his emergency medicine residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1998. He did an EMS Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin 1998-1999.

He served as Medical Director for Orange Cross Ambulance in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, as well as Assistant Medical Director/Consulting Medical Director for Milwaukee County EMS. From 2000-2008, Dr. Andrews was the Medical Director of Flight For Life in Wisconsin and northern Illinois, and was Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 2008, he took a position in Minnesota as Medical Director for North Memorial Ambulance Service which had 5 helicopter bases and over 40 ground ambulance bases.

In 2009, he returned to Wisconsin to work for Aurora as an Emergency Physician and a Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Director. He currently serves as the Pre-Hospital Medical Director for Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, Aurora Medical Center - Burlington, Aurora Medical Center - Mount Pleasant, and Aurora Medical Center - Kensoha.

Regionally, he has Chaired the State of Wisconsin EMS Physician Advisory Council and has been Chair of the Wisconsin Southeast Regional Trauma Advisory Council (SERTAC). Dr. Andrews is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Board Certified in Emergency Medical Services.

Andrew Aswegan, MD, FACEP

Dr. Aswegan joined Advocate Aurora Health in 2022. He is originally from Minnesota and received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota in 2002. He was an Emergency Medicine Resident from 2002-2005 at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware where he developed in interest in EMS and received the Outstanding Contributions to Emergency Medical Services Award in 2005. Following graduation, he worked in both Delaware and Maryland and served as the EMS Medical Director for Cecil County, Maryland from 2008-2021. He became board certified in EMS in 2015. Dr. Aswegan moved to Lake Geneva in 2021, and he is happy to be back in the midwest. In addition to his Emergency Department and EMS duties, Dr. Aswegan also serves as the Medical Director for Aurora’s first aid stations at Summerfest and the Milwaukee Brewers’ home games at American Family Field.

Donald Keen, MD, MPH, LTC, MC, FS, USA

Dr. Keen began his full-time EMS career in 1993, working initially in various rural and suburban EMS and fire services. He then spent the majority of his 15-year career with the St. Louis Fire Department, where he served in both the EMS and Fire Suppression divisions. Additionally, he worked as a Critical Care Flight Paramedic with ARCH Air Medical Service in St. Louis. He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 2010 and did his residency in Emergency Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Keen completed a fellowship in EMS and earned a Master's in Public Health in 2015. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and in Emergency Medical Services.

Dr. Keen served on active duty with the United States Army during which he was the Medical Director for the Army’s Critical Care Flight Paramedic Program and the Program Director for the Department of Defense’s EMS Fellowship program. He also served as Medical Director for Joint Base San Antonio EMS, and as Associate Medical Director with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Dr. Keen left active duty in 2020 to work with Aurora Health Care as an Urgent Care Physician and Co-EMS Medical Director.
