Why Aurora for Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship?

Aurora Health Care’s merger in 2018 with Advocate Health Care made Advocate Aurora Health one of the top 12 not-for-profit health systems in the country serving nearly 3 million patients each year.

Aurora Health Care itself is the largest health care system in Wisconsin treating over 8,600 new cancers per year, with one third of those cases treated at our flagship Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Located in the heart of Milwaukee, Aurora St. Luke’s is the quaternary center for the 15-hospital system. With over 700 beds, Aurora St. Luke’s serves as the central hub for the Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship.

Specialty care

Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center has the only Nano knife device for irreversible electroporation of unresectable pancreatic and liver tumors in the state of Wisconsin.

We also have a hyper thermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) program and plans to incorporate intra-operative radiation therapy.

We are one of only two designated National Pancreas Foundation Pancreatic Cancer Centers in Wisconsin, and a Sarcoma Alliance Center of Excellence.

Research focus

Clinical, translational and laboratory research is highly encouraged and facilitated as a key part of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship. All fellows are expected to present at least one national meeting per year.

The Aurora Research Institute, located on the Aurora Sinai Medical Center campus, has a full basic science and translational lab which is available to our fellows.

Research can include (but is not limited to) retrospective database review, the development of clinical trials, translational concepts, outcomes research, pathologic analysis, large animal surgical research, and even bench-top basic science experiments.
