The PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency program prepares you to practice as a specialized clinician focusing on the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases. In a hospital internationally known for expertise in heart care, you will provide direct patient care and be a practice leader in hospital-based acute care cardiology services and associated ambulatory care cardiology clinics.

It’s internationally known for expertise in heart care and oncology. Aurora St. Luke’s also offers exceptional specialty care in areas such as critical care, abdominal/cardiothoracic transplant and neurosciences, and houses the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.

Aurora St. Luke’s serves as the primary training ground for cardiology pharmacy with two specialized ICUs in cardiology, high-volume cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs and advanced cardiac surgery services.

Program highlights

Residents gain experience throughout the year in direct patient care (ICU, acute care, and ambulatory care), project management, medication safety, and precepting through a variety of rotation experiences. The schedule of the residency year is tailored to the interest, experience, aptitude, and career goals of each resident. Residents further customize their program by choosing elective learning experiences based on individual needs and interests.

Notable program highlights:

  • Ambulatory care: advanced heart failure/transplant clinic, channelopathy clinic
  • Acute care: floor dedicated to arrhythmias and pulmonary hypertension
  • Critical care: cardiovascular surgery ICU, coronary ICU
  • Specialty experiences: advanced heart failure/cardiothoracic transplant, electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, cardio-oncology
  • Professional development: CE presentation, pharmacy school lecture, interviewing/recruiting participation, medication safety experience, precepting PGY1’s and APPE students, multidisciplinary committee participation, attending professional meetings (e.g. ACC Annual)

Residency projects

Each pharmacy resident also completes a residency project. Pharmacy residency projects are practice-based and align with the department’s strategic plan. Residents formally present their projects at a statewide conference and receive the opportunity to publish their work.

All pharmacy residency candidates must complete a virtual interview. Interview dates cannot be rescheduled.
