Pediatric ophthalmology
Find a doctorPediatric ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye care for children. They perform eye exams, diagnose diseases, prescribe medications, perform surgery and execute treatment plans – setting the stage for healthy eyesight throughout childhood and adulthood.
And as part of our expanisve network of medical specialists, your child’s ophthalmologist has access to health care resources and technologies throughout Wisconsin – for comprehensive treatment of the whole child.
Some pediatric eye conditions
When detected at an early age, childhood eye problems can be treated, improved upon, and sometimes corrected altogether.
That's why it's so important to screen your child for:
- Lazy eye (amblyopia)
- Crossed eyes (strabismus)
- Nearsightedness
- Farsightedness
- Astigmatism
- Birth defects like unopened tear ducts (congenital tear duct obstruction)
The sooner your ophthalmologist can identify the issue and prescribe treatment, the more likely it is that the problem may be resolved. Early diagnosis may also help to protect your child’s eye health long-term.
Pediatric eye services
If necessary, your ophthalmologist may prescribe treatment that’s appropriate for your child’s age, eye condition and overall health.
Treatment may include:
- Medication
- Therapy
- Corrective lenses (eyeglasses)
- Surgery
After an initial eye exam and diagnosis, your pediatric ophthalmologist will discuss the right treatment for your child’s eye condition.
Your eye doctor will also take note of any other health issues impacting your child, and connect you with the right Aurora specialist if need be. Because we don’t just believe in treating a wide spectrum of eye issues – we believe in treating the whole child.
