Injectables and fillers are nonsurgical treatments that temporarily erase age lines on the face and neck. Doctors inject small amounts of natural and man-made substances into frown lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.

As you age, facial muscles weaken and skin develops fine lines. If you’re bothered by them, injectables and fillers can help. They’re sometimes called “liquid facelifts” because they offer many of the same benefits as a real facelift. But because they don’t involve surgery, they’re more affordable and you’ll recover faster.

Your doctor at Aurora will work with you to decide on the best approach to meet your needs. There are many types of injectables and fillers, and several ways to apply them. At Aurora, the injectables we use include botulinum toxin. The fillers we use include:

• Calcium hydroxylapatite: This substance, which is found in human bones, makes cheeks look fuller. It’s also used to fill deep creases, like frown lines and lines from the base of the nose to the corners of the mouth.
• Hyaluronic acid: This is a natural substance found in your body that doctors use to fill small facial creases and wrinkles.
• Poly-L-lactic acid: This synthetic material coaxes the body to produce collagen, which fills in wrinkles and age lines. It works best on lines in the lower half of the face.
• Another option is to have your doctor remove fat from other parts of your body through liposuction and then inject it to fill lines in your face. Fat injections reduce your risk of having an allergic reaction, though they require two separate procedures.

Injections and fillers can be done in a few minutes. Most people feel only mild discomfort, though your doctor may use a topical anesthetic to numb your skin first. You’ll need to have injections every few months to preserve the effects.
