Varicose & spider vein surgery

Find a doctor

Varicose veins can be unsightly – and uncomfortable, causing aching, throbbing and swelling. They develop when vein walls weaken and stretch so blood pools in them, making them bulge and twist. They occur most often in the legs.

Spider veins are smaller dilated blood vessels that create what look like thin red and purple threads or webs just under the skin’s surface. They don’t cause pain, but they can make you feel self-conscious.

At Aurora, we’re pleased to offer a number of treatments for varicose veins and spider veins. They’re minimally invasive – using lasers, injections and other techniques – and are done on an outpatient basis so you can heal quickly.

Treatment options

Your Aurora provider will answer any questions you have, and offer suggestions for treatment. Options may include:

  • Sclerotherapy: An FDA-approved solution is injected into the veins, which makes them collapse and eventually disappear. Blood flow shifts to nearby healthy veins. You’ll most likely need several sessions, scheduled four to six weeks apart.
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy: Tiny incisions are made in the skin to remove veins close to the surface. It’s usually done with local anesthetic and often doesn’t require stitches.
  • Laser surgery: Intense light pulses seal the veins and make them fade.
  • Endovenous ablation: Lasers or radio waves are delivered through a thin tube (catheter) to seal the veins.
  • Endoscopic vein surgery: Veins are closed with a surgical device on the end of a tiny camera attached to a catheter. This is used in severe cases when the veins are causing skin ulcers.
  • Vein stripping and ligation: This two-part procedure involves surgically tying off a vein, then stripping (removing) it, usually through a minimally invasive surgery called venous ablation. Learn more about vein ligation and stripping.
