Multiple sclerosis (MS) physical therapy
Find a physical therapistMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable progressive disease where a person’s immune system attacks nerve fibers and the surrounding sheathing. The inflammation produced by this condition disrupts the nerve cell processes, ultimately impacting electrical messaging occurring within the brain and spine.
Since each person is affected differently, the symptoms of the disease can range from mild to the inability to write, speak or walk.
Treating MS with physical therapy
Physical, occupational and speech therapy are important management tools for MS – especially since treatment can be adjusted to better manage the various stages of the disease. Our goal is to help you to remain active, mobile, safe and comfortable.
Common symptoms managed through treatment include:
- Aerobic endurance
- Balance
- Cognitive fog/memory difficulty
- Coordination/ataxia
- Difficulty completing daily tasks like dressing, laundry
- Fatigue
- Gait
- Respiratory function
- Spasticity and flexibility
- Weakness
During your initial treatment session, our specialist(s) will evaluate your current functional ability as well as identify what you would like to be able to accomplish. We'll consult with your primary care doctor, your neurologist and any other specialists you've seen to gather information about what type of MS you have. Using all this information, we'll design an exercise and activity program to help you optimize your functioning levels.
Physical therapy at different MS stages
After completing your initial treatment regime, you may find it necessary to return to the clinic for additional multiple sclerosis physical therapy if new symptoms arise or changes in functional levels occur. These appointments will allow us to proactively address any concerns you may have and provide training to help minimize daily challenges and limitations.
Since MS is a progressive condition, it’s not unusual for people to fluctuate between periods of stability and relapse. As part of your treatment plan, we may recommend the use of adaptive equipment or assistive devices (e.g., grab bars, shower chairs, walkers, scooters, or wheelchairs) to improve mobility and provide safe access to activities at home, at work and in the community.
Benefits of physical therapy for multiple sclerosis
Exercise has been shown to be safe and beneficial for most people with MS. Research indicates that exercise may stimulate neuroprotection, neurogeneration and neuroplasticity, which could help reduce long-term disability.
Maintaining strength, balance and endurance protects your ability to function and may delay further progression of the disease. Your physical therapist will help you find a routine that enables success. Using equipment such as a stationary bike, rowing machine or an elliptical machine during multiple sclerosis physical therapy allows you to exercise at your own pace in a way that is gentle for your joints. Aquatic therapy, tai chi and yoga are also good choices for people with MS.
Our ongoing support
MS affects each person differently. Knowing that an individual diagnosed with this disease has unique challenges, your physical, occupational and/or speech therapist will develop a personalized movement program tailored to you – including physical and cognitive activity, exercise, and adaptive equipment. Additionally, your clinician is a good resource for family and friends since the disease impacts more than the individual.
