What is an athletic trainer?

An athletic trainer is a licensed health professional who specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating sports injuries. Athletic trainers work under the direction of Aurora sports medicine doctors. Our athletic trainers also help active people play at the top of their game through our sports performance programs.

Athletic trainers at Aurora

Highlights of our athletic trainer team include:

  • Expertise: Our athletic trainers complete rigorous training in caring for sports injuries. In addition to earning bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in athletic training, they also participate in ongoing education to maintain their Wisconsin license. The American Medical Association recognizes athletic training as an allied health care professional.
  • Injury prevention: We work with players of all skill levels throughout eastern Wisconsin, develop conditioning programs to help build strength, and provide one-on-one care to athletes at risk for injury. Find out more about our team medical coverage program.
  • Convenient access to injury evaluations: When am injury occurs, athletes who are part of our team medical coverage program receive evaluations right on the spot. What’s more, we offer all athletes free injury evaluations at over 55 clinic locations.
  • A large sports medicine team: When an injury requires specialized care, an Aurora athletic trainer can refer you to the right doctor or specialist. Our team includes primary care doctors, chiropractors and surgeons who specialize in treating sports injuries. Many members of our team have been working together for years, and know exactly how to collaborate to keep your treatment moving forward. Meet our sports health team.
  • Active community partner: Local organizations turn to Aurora’s athletic trainers for information and support. We provide education at health fairs and community wellness events, and we offer medical assistance at mass sporting events.

The difference between an athletic trainer & a personal trainer

Although the titles sound similar, an athletic trainer and a personal trainer play very different roles:

  • A personal trainer helps active people achieve personal fitness goals, such as losing weight or getting stronger. Physical trainers often work in gyms.
  • An athletic trainer works with teams and individual athletes to prevent, diagnose and treat sports injuries. Athletic trainers also care for sports injuries in clinics alongside doctors and other health professionals.
