Our in-depth understanding of the laws and justice system means you can count on us to help you navigate your legal options. Even if you do not wish to press charges, we lend a caring ear and help you take the first steps toward regaining your sense of wellness.

- Expertise: All forensic nurses receive ongoing training in meeting the medical, legal and emotional needs of sexual assault survivors. Many of our nurses are also certified sexual assault nurse examiners. This recognition signifies our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of forensic nursing.

Signs of sexual abuse aren’t always visible at first, which is why we use special technology to help gather evidence. - Medical treatments: In addition to care for minor injuries, we offer emergency contraception when necessary to help prevent pregnancy.

The Aurora Healing Center at Sinai Medical Center offers:
- A secure waiting room that is separate from other clinical areas
- Access to comfort items, including couches, blankets, light snacks and hand-held tablet devices for entertainment
- Large exam rooms with soothing décor that create a comfortable environment for performing a medical exam or just talking
- A private, spa-like bathroom with a large shower, toiletries and towels for cleaning up after a medical exam

Our forensic nursing services include:
- Forensic evaluation: During an evaluation, we perform a physical exam to detect signs of injury. We also collect images and document findings that can serve as evidence in a court case.
- Emotional support: We lend a caring ear and help you stay comfortable during your stay. Our advocates help you plan the next steps in your healing journey. Learn more about survivor advocacy.
- Legal advice: Our forensic nurses understand the laws that protect sexual assault survivors. We advise you of your legal options if you wish to pursue them.
- Assistance in reporting the crime to the police: If you wish to report the crime, we help you navigate the process and answer questions. Reporting is required only if the survivor is a child.
- Testimony in court: Our forensic nurses are available to testify as expert witnesses if a case goes to court.
- Referrals to other services: We coordinate access to additional services that can help you regain a sense of normalcy in your life. These services may include community resources, like safe shelter, or other services available through Aurora. Find out more about our healing services.
- Preventive care: In addition to screening for sexually transmitted infections (STI), we also provide immediate treatment, which lowers your risk of complications. Common STIs we treat include chlamydia and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
