Acoustic reflex testing, often referred to as the acoustic reflex test, is a crucial diagnostic tool to assess the integrity of the auditory system, which consists of the outer, middle and inner ear and the connecting brain regions.

This non-invasive procedure measures the tightening of the small muscle in your middle ear, known as the stapedial muscle, in response to loud sounds. By doing this, your Aurora Health Care audiologist gets valuable insights into your hearing health to provide the best care possible.

The importance of stapedial reflex assessment

The stapedial reflex, also known as the acoustic reflex, plays a significant role in protecting our ears from excessively loud noises. When we encounter a loud sound, such as a gunshot or a loud explosion, this reflex reduces the intensity of the sound that reaches the inner ear.

Evaluating the stapedial reflex is important in diagnosing conditions such as sensorineural hearing loss, acoustic neuroma (a noncancerous tumor) and other auditory system disorders. It also helps your audiologist determine the threshold at which the reflex occurs.

After completing the acoustic reflex test, our audiologists will analyze the results and go over them with you. The results will indicate the threshold levels at which your stapedial reflex occurs and whether there is any abnormal decay, or reduction in the reflex, over time.
