Speech therapy at home

Contact us

If you need speech therapy because of a medical condition or accident, Aurora Health at Home provides thorough help wherever you call home. Our speech-language pathologists address issues with swallowing, mental processing and communication for all ages.

Specialized treatments for home health speech therapy

We understand that issues with speech, memory and swallowing greatly limit your quality of life. To address these issues quickly and correctly, our therapists use targeted programs and practices, including:

  • Swallow therapy: If you have a swallowing issue, our specially certified therapists may use noninvasive electrical stimulation to resolve it.
  • Chronic disease program: Shortness of breath sometimes causes eating problems for people with heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our trained therapists personalize therapy and provide disease-specific exercises.
  • Program for Parkinson’s disease: If you have Parkinson’s disease, we send you therapists with LSVT Big® certification. This program provides effective speech treatment for people with neurological disorders.

Improve your quality of life with in-home speech therapy

When someone struggles with eating, understanding or speaking, it affects the entire family. Our speech therapy program works with you and your family to find solutions you can apply to your daily life. Challenges that we help with include:

  • Aphasia, or reduced ability to communicate through written words and speech
  • Dysarthria, or problems with muscles for speech
  • Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing
  • Cognitive issues and memory loss
  • Slurred speech

Who benefits from speech therapy at home?

If your health prevents you from leaving home easily, in-home speech therapy may help, no matter your age. To receive speech therapy at home, your doctor must order it. You must also meet the requirements for home care.

At Aurora Health at Home, our speech therapists treat people with a wide range of conditions, including:

Getting started with Aurora Health at Home speech therapy

When you receive home-based speech therapy, you can expect:

  • Initial assessment: During your initial assessment, a speech therapist evaluates your condition and reviews your medications. The therapist answers any questions you have and explains the schedule for your therapy.
  • Therapy visits: During each visit, the speech therapist reviews techniques and practices that you can directly apply to your daily life.
  • Fall risk evaluation: All Aurora Health at Home therapists receive training in the Standing Strong Falls Prevention program. Your therapist may suggest small changes to your surroundings that keep you safe, support your treatment and promote healing.
  • Education: Your therapist educates both you and your family or caregiver. You learn techniques such as safe swallowing strategies, verbal and nonverbal communication systems, and how to use memory aids.
