Salivary gland disorder treatment

If you suffer from dry or “cotton” mouth, you may have a salivary gland disorder. Salivary glands produce saliva (spit) and secrete it into the mouth. Saliva helps you chew and digest food, and helps keep the mouth free of germs. Salivary gland disorders include infection, blockage of the gland or cancer.

Treatment options for salivary gland disorders

Our ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists perform some the most advanced surgical treatments for salivary gland disorders, including:

• Parotidectomy: removal of the parotid glands, which are the largest salivary glands in the body, located on each side of the neck. It’s usually done to remove tumors or abnormal growths on the gland.
• Salivary duct calculi extraction: removal of salivary calculus (sometimes called a salivary gland stone, a salivary duct stone or a sialolith), a calcified mass that can form inside the gland, blocking the flow of saliva into the mouth
• Sialendoscopy: Aurora is the only hospital in Wisconsin that performs this procedure, which is used to remove salivary calculus and also to widen narrowed salivary glands. It doesn’t require an incision, which means you can expect fewer complications, a smaller risk of infection and a faster recovery time.
• Submandibular gland resection: removal of tumors or other abnormal growths from the submandibular glands, large salivary glands located beneath the floor of the mouth
