Cochlear implants to treat hearing disorders
Our team of ENT specialists can diagnose and treat a variety of conditions causing hearing disorders and hearing loss. Cochlear implants are a treatment we offer to both children and adults diagnosed with profound hearing loss or deafness.
Different from hearing aids, cochlear implants are small, electronic devices that consist of an external piece that sits behind the ear, and a second piece placed surgically beneath the skin. Cochlear implants bypass the damaged portions of the ear and send signals directly to the auditory nerve.
While cochlear implants can significantly increase the sensation of sound and the understanding of speech, they cannot cure or reverse hearing loss. These implants also require therapy and practice to learn and understand the sensations of hearing. Talk to your otolaryngology doctor to learn more about this treatment and if it's right for you.
