Integrative & functional medicine consultations

Find a doctor

Some of our integrative medicine and functional medicine clinicians offer consultations – visits involving in-depth evaluation and recommendations for one or two medical concerns.

An integrative medicine or functional medicine consultation may be right for you if:

  • You’re interested in a holistic approach to health care.
  • You have a complex condition and haven’t found relief through conventional approaches.
  • You don’t tolerate medications well, prefer to avoid prescription medications or don’t seem to be responding to them.

What to expect

Your first consultation visit will be 60-80 minutes long, so you’ll have more face-to-face time with your clinician than you’ve come to expect. We’ll ask detailed questions about nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, relationships, spirituality, critical life events and potentially other topics. Follow up visits are 15-45 minutes long.

We may emphasize treatments that don’t require medications, such as supplements and botanicals. We’ll provide comprehensive information on topics such as nutrition, sleep and stress management. Your clinician may also recommend conventional lab tests as well as validated lab testing not usually offered by a conventional provider (such as stool, saliva or heavy metal testing).

We may also recommend chiropractic care, massage therapy, integrative health coaching, acupuncture or other conventional or holistic treatments.

When you make an appointment, we may give you forms to fill out. It’s best to fill these out before the day of your appointment in case you need to gather information from different sources. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to allow time to check in. Be sure to bring any completed paperwork and a list of medications and supplements you’re currently taking.

Costs and insurance coverage

Comprehensive 60- to 80-minute integrative or functional medicine consultations are more expensive than brief primary care visits and may cost between $500 and $1,200. Your clinician may spend an additional 15 to 30 minutes outside the office visit coordinating your care. This may be reflected in your medical bill.

Office visits are covered by insurance, subject to any deductible or copay. Almost all lab tests are covered by insurance, subject to any deductible. Some outside laboratories will not bill insurance, so you would be responsible for payment.

We can give you a list of common labs so you can verify insurance coverage and determine the cost to you. You may choose whether to proceed with testing based on financial concerns or other personal preferences.
